By The Arabic School
Many ʿĀlimiyyah graduates read unvowelled text but read slowly, parse with hesitation, and rarely speak or write. Their need is speed, precision and production, not more new texts. This article sets out a pathway for them.
The consolidation pathway
- Naḥw. Qaṭr un-Nadā, revised with al-Minhāj fī al-Qawāʿid.
- Ṣarf. al-Maqṣūd.
- Reading. The Madārij al-Qirāʾah series, with selections from ʿAlī al-Ṭanṭāwī.
- Speaking and writing. Weekly sessions alongside the above.
The aim is not to cover new ground but to make what you know fast and sure. Revise a text you studied once, this time parsing every line, and read widely at a level just below your limit.
Going further in each science
- Naḥw. Shudhūr adh-Dhahab and Qawāʿid al-Iʿrāb, then al-Kāfiyah of Ibn al-Ḥājib and the Alfiyyah of Ibn Mālik, then Uṣūl al-Naḥw.
- Ṣarf. Lāmiyyat al-Afʿāl and Shadhā al-ʿArf, then al-Shāfiyah. Our Certificate Course in Ṣarf, from Matn al-Amthilah to Shadhā al-ʿArf, carries an ijāzah.
- Balāghah. The keys course leading into Mukhtaṣar al-Maʿānī, then Mukhtaṣar al-Maʿānī itself, then Balāghī analysis of the Qurʾān, the Sunnah, poetry and prose, preparing you for the works of al-Jurjānī.
- Adab and Matn al-Lughah. Wide reading in the four Adab stages, memorised poetry, and daily use of the classical dictionaries.
The aim at this level is independence
The advanced student reads a classical work alone, checks it against the dictionaries and commentaries, and explains it to others. That last step matters most. Teaching a text is the surest test of whether you own it.
Speaking and writing for graduates
Graduates often find speaking harder than reading because they have only met Arabic on the page. Begin with short, regular speaking sessions on familiar topics, and a weekly writing task checked by a teacher. Fluency follows practice, not more grammar.
